We all know our body isn’t quite the same in our 50s as it was in our 20s. Our hair starts graying, our knees start hurting, and things hurt in different places sometimes for no apparent reason at all. When looking back at my 20s and even my 30s I realize whoever said, “Youth is wasted on the young” sure knew what they were talking about. I know I sure took “Youth” for granted.
When looking back on my 40s I realize now my body was changing but my Mind Set wasn’t. I was gaining weight (and not doing anything about it), I was stressed to the max (and didn’t even realize it). Eating too much, raising kids, and working too many hours.
I hit my 50s and gained a little wisdom. I recognized that I was overweight and stressed. This new-found “Wisdom” still didn’t take effect though. Now I was, “Admiring the Problem”, I knew what the problem was, but I wasn’t doing anything about it. I had recognized and acknowledged it in my head, but I wasn’t changing it. Naturally, it didn’t get any better. In fact, it got worse.
So… Here I am in my mid-50’s, and I have finally decided to do something about Brain Health After Retirement. I’m going to turn my “Wisdom” into “Action”. Thankfully I was fortunate enough to be able to retire in my 50s. This gave me the opportunity to look at my life and come up with a game plan. After all, I had plenty of time on my hands so I might as well make myself healthier. Especially when some studies suggest that people die sooner after retirement.

Have you ever heard the saying, “You can’t Out-Train a bad diet?” It’s true, no matter how hard you exercise you are not going to be truly healthy without exercise’s best friend, a healthy diet.
There are apps that can help you along your journey. My personal favorite is My Fitness Pal. I highly recommend the “Premium” version. It breaks down all your foods, helps you set precise goals, and gives you all the nutritional values. The $79.99/year price is well worth it. It also has an Intermittent Fasting feature which I personally used to lower my blood sugar. I dropped my A1C from a 13 to a 6.5 in about six months.
You have to plan for what you put into your body. When you ensure that you are getting all the micro-nutrients you need, you will quickly feel the difference.
Reducing Stress: Enhancing Your Brain Health After Retirement
Stress is an underrated “Silent Killer”, just like High Blood Pressure (Hypertension), and you have to find a way to manage it. Retirement helped me with that.
We can’t remove all stress from our life, but we can learn to manage it which greatly enhances our Brain Health After Retirement. Planning and organizing are great ways to reduce stress. Things will go sometimes wrong, and not according to plan, but I had to learn to reduce my stress. Identifying the things that were out of my control actually helped with this.
Nothing positive comes from stressing over what you can’t control but we live in the real world and sometimes it can’t be helped.

Finding a Hobby
Everybody’s interests are different, but my hobby was music. I was a drummer years before and was quite serious about it for a long time. Then it happened, life kicked me in the teeth with “Responsibilities” and I gave it up. For many years I had nothing to do with playing music. Why? I sure don’t know. I enjoyed it and it gave me a break from the world. A true escape.
After I retired, I began playing again and what a difference it made. It truly made me happier.
Everyone needs to find a hobby, a true benefit to Brain Health After Retirement. I can’t tell you what that hobby should be because everyone needs to find that out for themselves. If you don’t have one in mind, you can try different things until you find it. Getting exercise is one of those necessary things to help your overall health. Even if it’s walking it can make a difference. I added walking to my exercise routine, and I did see some results. I recommend a fitness tracker like the Garmin Venu 2. Not only will it track your steps, but it will also monitor your heart rate.
I had been tracking my steps for quite a long time but when I added strength training is when I saw the quickest results. If you don’t already have any strength training equipment at home, it’s not really that expensive to get the basics. I found this set of dumbbells with a rack at Amazon.com.

There are several ways to stay active. Staying active is different than exercising. You just need to move more. Here are some really simple ways to be more active and once you’re in the habit, it really takes little effort.
- Park farther away from the store and walk. (this also helps avoid door-dings on your car).
- Use the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Instead of carrying too much, make more trips. (take your grocery bags into the house one at a time).
- Bend over more. Make a conscious effort at times to randomly bend over ten times.
- Squat when lifting something and focus on lifting with your legs. Once again, squat randomly ten times.
All the pieces were falling into place.
All that was lacking now was finding a way to exercise my brain. I had considered the idea of an online business. One that had no monetary investment. I had time to invest so I was looking for something to pursue that would keep me busy and at the same time give me a sense of accomplishment.
Once you retire, it gets harder to feel like you have a purpose.

There were lots of options out there, but I found (through trial and error) that not all of them were right for me. I started a new business. This may or may not be the right choice for you, but this post is designed to share options based on my personal experience in my pursuit of strengthening my Brain Health After Retirement. Starting an online business made me feel younger again. It stimulated my brain and I found that my thinking process had grown noticeably stronger. I didn’t have to search for the bigger words anymore. It’s been a true game changer.
