Anyone who has the luxury of owning their own pool can tell you that a swimming pool comes with plenty of quirks.
It’s one thing to maintain all the physical equipment such as pumps, filters and chlorinators but it’s a whole new ballgame when it comes to balancing your pool chemicals.
Get it wrong and your pool turns green quickly. That crystal clear beautiful blue oasis is now an algae infested swamp.
It took me years to learn what I’m going to share with you in the time it takes to read this article.
Let’s dive right in!
There will be slight differences when it comes to geography. The farther North you live the less time you will have your pool open for the season. I happen to live in South Texas, so my pool stays open year-round.
Ultimately the process will remain the same but down here I start much earlier. I start in February. February is when I get all the chemical readings in-line. I have discovered that getting all the chemicals in-line in February saves me 87% on my pool chemical costs the rest of the year.

Beginning the Season (Winter)
I always start by making sure the PH is balanced. I wasted a lot of time and effort battling this strange white substance at the bottom of my pool. PH being way too high was making my chlorine ineffective.

Spring and Fall
Now that the swimming season has actually begun and I have my chemicals balanced, it’s time to maintain the healthy swimming water.
Let’s begin with filter pump run time. I follow the one hour for every 10 degrees rule.
- Example- If the outside temperature is in the 60s, I run the filter pump for 6 hrs/day. When the outside temperature is in the 80s, I run the filter pump 8 hrs/day. Etc.
This has worked well for me, and I’ve only had to replace the sand in the filter about every three years.
For safety, if you change the sand yourself make sure to wear long sleeves and gloves. The fiberglass in the lid ring can be dangerous!
NOTE: My pool is 13,000 gallons so you may have to alter/recalculate the quantity of the chemicals based on your individual pool size.
During this time of year, I’m using less shock (more on that later) but keeping my chlorinator set at 2. I have an inline chlorinator tower that takes the 3″ tablets.
A valuable (and expensive) lesson I learned during the white unknown substance fiasco was I was filling the chlorinator to the top with the 3″ tablets. I didn’t need to do this. I only needed to keep 2 tablets in the chlorinator to be effective.
Your pool needs Cyanauric Acid, which is a stabilizer, to protect it from the suns UV rays but too many chlorine tablets will raise the Cyanauric Acid levels too high.

We use In The Swim 3 Inch Stabilized Chlorine Tablets. They give our pool the proper amount of Chlorine/Stabilization balance. Now that I’ve reduced the number of tablets inside the chlorinator to the proper amount, I can get two years out of a 50lb bucket.
One of the overall biggest lessons I’ve learned is to not use the chlorine tablets as the primary sanitizer. Pool shock weekly should be the primary sanitizer. Too many stabilized chlorine tablets mean your other chemicals will stay unbalanced.

During the spring and fall months I’m shocking my pool once a week, but I’ve lowered the dosage from where I will be in the summer months. I’m using 1.5 lbs/wk. In the summer, I will increase this to 3 lbs/wk.

This 50lb bucket lasts me about one year. Shock is a little expensive, but it’s a necessary evil.
Summer
Once summer arrives, it’s pretty much the same process, just in different amounts. As mentioned above, I will increase my shock to 3 lbs/wk and with the temperature being in the 90s, I’m running my filter pump 9 hrs/day.
Since reducing to two chlorine tablets in the chlorinator and adding 3 lbs. of shock weekly, I’ve pretty much eliminated all other chemicals which is how I’m saving 87% of my pools costs per year.
Over the past year, I’ve only needed the PH down twice. My PH levels weren’t overly high, but I was determined to not have my pool turn green again. Yes, it’s been green a few times.
